Hajjah, Yemen – A family outing in Hajjah Governorate turned tragic on November 21, 2024, when six members of the same family drowned in the Wadi Mour reservoir.
Ismail Sha'been Zain, an educator from Hayran, had intended to provide a joyful escape for his family by taking them to the reservoir, located in the Al-Zahra district of Hodeidah Governorate. This site is cherished by locals for its scenic beauty and is often a destination for families seeking relaxation.
However, the day took a devastating turn when the youngest daughter fell into the water. In a desperate attempt to save her, her sister jumped in but struggled to stay afloat, leading to her own drowning. A third sister followed, and their brother, Hussam, unable to watch his siblings fight for their lives, also jumped in to help but tragically drowned alongside them.
Ismail then plunged into the reservoir to rescue his children but also drowned. His brother, who was accompanying them, met the same fate, bringing the total number of victims to six: Ismail, three daughters, his son Hussam, and his brother.
The local community is now in mourning, grappling with the profound loss brought on by this tragic event. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with recreational activities near water.
