Sennar, Sudan – On Saturday, November 23, 2024, the Sudanese army announced that it has regained control of the city of Sennar, the capital of Sennar State in southeastern Sudan, from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
In a brief statement on X (formerly Twitter), the army declared, “We have regained the city of Sennar from the hands of the Rapid Support Forces.”
The army also shared videos on its official Facebook page, showing troops inside the headquarters of the 17th Infantry Division in the city. The footage captured celebrations among residents of Sennar as the army reestablished its presence.
As of 11:25 AM (UTC), the RSF had not issued any comments regarding the situation.
The RSF had initially launched an assault on Sennar State on June 24, capturing several towns, including Sennar itself on June 29.
Recently, the Sudanese army successfully secured the strategic Jebel Muya mountain in Sennar and recaptured the towns of Souki and Dandar from the RSF.
Since mid-April 2023, the army and the RSF have been engaged in a conflict that has resulted in over 20,000 deaths and displaced more than 13 million people, according to estimates from the United Nations and local authorities.
International and UN calls for an end to the war are escalating, as the ongoing fighting threatens to plunge Sudan into a humanitarian disaster, with millions facing famine and death due to food shortages across 13 of the country's 18 states.
