On Tuesday, November 26, 2024, Abdu Rabbu Miftah, the Deputy Governor of Marib, announced that the province is home to more than 204 displacement camps, including Al-Jufayna, which is the largest camp for displaced persons in Yemen.

Miftah made this statement during a meeting with a delegation from the World Food Programme (WFP), led by Leila Ahadi, the WFP office director in Aden, who is currently visiting Marib to discuss enhancing humanitarian partnerships in response to the growing food insecurity in the region.

According to the official Yemeni news agency Saba, the meeting also involved a review of the names of beneficiaries who were removed from the program's recent distribution lists, along with the regular distribution of food rations to eligible recipients.

Miftah highlighted that "thousands of displaced individuals" have been waiting for years to be included in the WFP beneficiary lists, despite meeting all necessary conditions and criteria.

He emphasized the urgent need to expand the WFP's programs and interventions in Marib to address the increasing food insecurity among both families living below the poverty line and newly displaced families arriving daily in the province. He noted that this situation poses a significant burden that exceeds the capabilities of local authorities and the government to manage.

The deputy governor stressed the role of the WFP in mobilizing additional funding to tackle what he described as the worst humanitarian crisis in Yemen and the world, particularly evident in Marib, which has absorbed over 2.3 million displaced people.

Miftah affirmed the local authority's commitment to strengthening humanitarian partnerships with the WFP, providing all necessary facilities and support for the implementation of its humanitarian interventions transparently and impartially, which would alleviate the suffering of both displaced individuals and the host community facing food scarcity and the threat of famine.

In addition, Saleh Al-Saqaf, the Planning Director in Marib, expressed his appreciation for the WFP delegation's visit, reviewing the projects that have been and are being implemented in the province. He underscored the importance of enhancing coordination and collaboration to address pressing needs.

Ahadi praised the local authority's efforts in overcoming challenges and facilitating the implementation of the project to update beneficiary data for food assistance, acknowledging the pressures and burdens faced by local authorities due to the increasing number of displaced persons and the high demand for services. She stated that the WFP will work to mobilize more supporters and adequate funding, which will help ensure regular food distribution when available.
