On Sunday, December 1, 2024, the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported receiving notification of a maritime incident off the coast of Aden, southern Yemen.
In a brief statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) and reviewed by Barran Press, the British agency indicated that the incident occurred approximately 80 nautical miles south of Aden.
The UKMTO did not provide further details regarding the incident but noted that local authorities are currently investigating. The agency advised ship captains to "navigate with caution and report any suspicious activity."
Since October, the Houthi group, which is internationally classified as a terrorist organization, has continued its attacks using missiles and drones against commercial shipping vessels in the Red Sea, Arabian Sea, and Gulf of Aden.
These attacks have led to increased marine insurance costs and prompted many international shipping companies to opt for significantly longer routes around the southern tip of Africa.
In response to the Houthi threats and to protect maritime navigation, the United States formed a multinational coalition in December 2023, while U.S. forces have occasionally conducted strikes against Houthi military targets.
