On Sunday, December 1, 2024, the Southern Teachers' Union announced the commencement of a strike in all schools across Aden, southern Yemen, starting Monday, due to delays in teacher salaries.

The newly established union, affiliated with the Southern Transitional Council, stated that the decision to strike was made in response to widespread public discontent among both civilian and military sectors regarding the government's failure to disburse salaries.

The statement highlighted that "teachers in Aden are suffering from difficult living conditions because their salaries have not been paid for the past two months," and stipulated that the strike would be called off only if the government urgently paid teachers' dues in full.

On November 23, the Southern Teachers' Union had given the government a one-week ultimatum to address their demands or face escalatory measures, including protests in front of local authorities and educational bodies.

While the internationally recognized Yemeni government has been processing salaries for various state sectors, the continuous decline of the Yemeni rial against foreign currencies has exacerbated employees' hardships, prompting many to leave their jobs for the private sector.
