On Monday, December 2, 2024, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that its forces successfully thwarted a "reckless" attack launched by the Houthi movement, classified as a terrorist organization, aimed at three commercial ships transiting the Gulf of Aden.
In a statement released on the platform Barran Press, CENTCOM reported that the U.S. Navy destroyers USS Stackley and USS Okin were escorting the three U.S.-flagged commercial vessels when they intercepted a barrage of missiles.
The command stated that the destroyers successfully shot down three anti-ship ballistic missiles, three one-way drone attack systems, and one anti-ship cruise missile. CENTCOM emphasized that the Houthi attacks, deemed "reckless," resulted in no injuries or damage to any civilian or U.S. naval vessels.
This operation underscores CENTCOM's ongoing commitment to protecting American personnel, regional partners, and international shipping from Houthi attacks supported by Iran.
On Sunday, the Houthis had claimed responsibility for targeting a U.S. destroyer and three supply ships in the Gulf of Aden with 16 ballistic and cruise missiles, alleging that their strikes were "accurate and direct."
Since October 2023, the Houthis have continued their missile and drone assaults against commercial shipping in the Red Sea, Arabian Sea, and Gulf of Aden, leading to increased maritime insurance costs and prompting many international shipping companies to opt for much longer routes around the southern tip of Africa.
To deter the Houthis and safeguard maritime navigation, the United States formed a multinational coalition in December 2023 and has periodically conducted strikes against Houthi military targets.
