Yemeni Prime Minister Promises to Empower Women in Decision-Making Roles

On Monday, December 2, 2024, internationally recognized Yemeni Prime Minister Ahmed Bin Mubarak announced the government’s commitment to empowering women in decision-making positions and facilitating their access to leadership roles in both public and private sectors.

Speaking at the opening of the seventh Women’s Summit, held over two days in Aden, Yemen’s temporary capital, Bin Mubarak emphasized the government’s focus on enhancing women’s participation in economic activities through training programs and initiatives to support women-led small businesses.

According to the state news agency Saba, Bin Mubarak highlighted that political and economic empowerment of women is a top priority for the government, viewing it as a fundamental pillar for societal advancement.

He stated that "women occupy a central position within the five tracks" that represent the government's priorities and agenda for the upcoming period, reflecting a belief in their capacity to contribute effectively to building a cohesive and progressive society.

Bin Mubarak praised the significant presence of ambassadors and representatives from the UN Secretary-General’s office at the summit, recognizing their role in conveying international support for women's issues.

He remarked, "The fact that this summit has been held in Aden for the seventh consecutive year demonstrates the city’s civilizational and pioneering character, as well as its commitment to inclusive dialogue that fosters effective solutions to enhance women’s status in our society."

The summit serves as an important platform to discuss the vital role of women in humanitarian, economic, and political spheres, as well as their contributions to the peace process that all aspire to achieve.

Bin Mubarak reiterated the government’s commitment to addressing the challenges faced by women across various sectors and creating a supportive environment that enables them to exercise their rights and participate actively in nation-building.

He added, "Our meeting today reflects our commitment to empowering women as mandated by our noble Islamic faith, providing them with a genuine space to express their aspirations and contribute to building a new Yemen through a collective vision for women's empowerment, making them a cornerstone of peace and sustainable development in our country."

The Prime Minister also acknowledged the importance of existing women’s organizations and their critical role in enhancing women’s status in society, promising to provide full support to these organizations to be effective partners in national development and the fight against corruption.

He expressed particular concern for empowering rural women by improving their access to essential services such as education, healthcare, and job opportunities, as well as supporting initiatives aimed at improving the lives of women in rural areas, recognizing their vital role in supporting their families.

Additionally, he commended the resilience of Yemeni women in areas still under Houthi control, stating that they embody the will of a people who reject oppression and violations.
