On Sunday, December 8, 2024, the Yemeni Presidential Council extended its congratulations to the Syrian people following the overthrow of what it termed the "Iranian tutelage regime" in Syria, marking the fall of Bashar al-Assad's government. The council emphasized the significance of Syria's return to the Arab fold.

During a meeting chaired by Rashad Al-Alimi, the council reaffirmed Yemen's commitment to the unity of Syrian territory and respect for its independence, sovereignty, and the people's desire for freedom, change, peace, security, and stability.

According to the official Yemeni news agency Saba, the council discussed the regional changes and their implications for the national landscape, including recent developments in Syria, Lebanon, and the occupied Palestinian territories, as well as Houthi attacks on international shipping lanes and their "devastating" effects on food security and global peace and security.

On the morning of December 8, Syrian opposition forces entered and took control of the capital, Damascus, as government troops withdrew from public institutions and streets, bringing an end to over 61 years of Ba'ath Party rule and 53 years of Assad family dominance.

Prior to this, on November 27, clashes erupted between Syrian government forces and opposition factions in western Aleppo, where opposition groups managed to seize control of Aleppo city and Idlib province. In the following days, they captured the cities of Hama, Daraa, Suwayda, Homs, and ultimately, Damascus.
