On December 9, 2024, reports emerged that engineer Mohammed Bashir, the head of the Syrian Salvation Government managing Idlib, has been tasked with forming a new Syrian government to oversee the transitional phase following the fall of the Assad regime.
This decision followed a meeting aimed at arranging a peaceful transfer of power and avoiding chaos in Syria. The discussions included opposition commander Ahmad Al-Shar'a, Bashir, and former Prime Minister of the Assad government, Mohammed Al-Jalali, who was assigned to manage governmental affairs during this transitional period, according to Al Jazeera.
Syrian TV, affiliated with the opposition, reported that the new government will begin its operations as soon as it is officially formed. Meanwhile, intensive meetings are taking place between the political affairs department of the opposition and foreign diplomatic missions to address the security and political situation in Syria post-Assad.
The political affairs department in Damascus stated that it aims to create conditions conducive to the safe return of displaced Syrians, urging those forced to leave the country to return and assist in rebuilding Syria. They emphasized the need for a new chapter in Syria’s history focused on construction and development, aiming to address past grievances through transparent mechanisms to achieve lasting peace.
The department also affirmed its commitment to playing a constructive role regionally and globally, focusing on security and stability, and building a rule of law that guarantees dignity, justice, and institutions that meet the aspirations of the Syrian people. It highlighted the necessity for comprehensive societal reconciliation based on justice and equality, while also promoting respectful relations with all nations.
The newly appointed head of the prospective Syrian government was born in Idlib province in 1983. He holds a degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Aleppo University (2007) and a degree in Sharia and Law from Idlib University (2021).
Bashir previously served as the Director of Associations, then as Minister of Development and Humanitarian Affairs in the Syrian Salvation Government in Idlib in 2022, and has been the head of the Salvation Government since early 2024.
