On December 10, 2024, the Press Freedom Observatory announced the recipients of the 2024 Courage in Journalism Awards. The winners include detained journalist Ahmed Maher, held in Aden, and kidnapped journalist Mohamed Al-Miyahi, abducted in Sana'a.

The observatory also posthumously awarded the Courage in Journalism Medal to the late journalist Mohamed Al-Absi, honoring his bravery and dedication to the field of journalism.

Al-Miyahi was kidnapped by the Iran-backed Houthi group on September 20, following a critical article he wrote about the group and its leader's speech during a Prophet Muhammad celebration.

In August 2022, Ahmed Maher's home was raided by forces affiliated with the Southern Transitional Council, resulting in his abduction along with his brother. He was subsequently denied access to court for over a year.

Mohamed Al-Absi, a prominent investigative journalist, died under mysterious circumstances in Sana'a on December 20, 2017. Prior to his death, he had published a comprehensive report detailing corruption within the Houthi group, leading many to suspect their involvement in his murder.
