On December 11, 2024, the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced plans to reopen its embassy in Syria "soon," just days after the ousting of President Bashar al-Assad and the establishment of a transitional government in the country.

According to the Qatari News Agency, spokesperson Majid Al-Ansari stated that the reopening aims to strengthen the historically close ties between Qatar and Syria, reflecting Qatar's unwavering support for the Syrian people as they seek to rebuild their nation on principles of justice, peace, stability, and prosperity.

Al-Ansari further explained that the embassy's reopening will enhance coordination with relevant authorities to facilitate the flow of humanitarian aid from Doha to Damascus via an airbridge.

On December 10, a transitional government led by Mohamed Al-Bashir officially assumed power, tasked with managing the country for three months after Assad fled to Russia, his long-time ally.

This announcement follows the Syrian armed opposition's declaration on December 8 that they had taken control of the capital, Damascus, marking the end of Assad's regime and the beginning of a "new era" for Syria. This transition came after a large-scale military operation launched by opposition forces on November 27, which culminated in the downfall of the Assad family’s rule, lasting over five decades.
