Local sources reported on December 11, 2024, that seven students were injured, three of them critically, after a hand grenade exploded in a classroom at Al-Han Bin Malik Educational School in the Dhoran district of Dhamar province, northern Yemen.

According to the sources, the grenade was brought to school by a fifth-grade student who had taken it from his father’s pocket, a member of the Houthi group, which is classified as a terrorist organization internationally. The child mistakenly believed the grenade was a piece of scrap metal he could trade.

While playing with the grenade in class with his peers, it detonated, resulting in severe injuries among the students. The explosion caused partial destruction of the classroom, including shattered windows and a broken door.

The injured students were transported to Al-Wahda Educational Hospital in Ma'abir, located in the northern part of the province, for treatment.

Reports indicate that regions controlled by the Houthi group have witnessed numerous incidents involving children and students mishandling weapons and grenades, leading to many casualties. Human rights reports accuse the group of turning educational facilities into sites for recruitment and arming, posing an existential threat to children's futures and exacerbating community suffering.
