The horrific attack unfolded on December 20, when a man drove his vehicle into a crowded Christmas market in Magdeburg, killing five people, including a child, and injuring over 200 others, with 41 reported to have serious injuries. The suspect, a 50-year-old Saudi doctor residing in Germany since 2006, was arrested following the incident.
Saxony-Anhalt's Prime Minister, Reiner Haseloff, described the attack as a "terrible tragedy," highlighting the potential for the death toll to rise due to the severity of some injuries.
The suspect's motives remain unclear. Reports indicate that he had not previously been flagged as a radical by German authorities, despite expressing extremist views on social media. The Saudi Foreign Ministry also condemned the attack, expressing solidarity with Berlin, while several countries, including France, Italy, Spain, and the United States, voiced their shock.
