On December 23, 2024, the “Masam” project, dedicated to clearing Yemen of landmines, announced that its teams successfully removed 570 landmines and unexploded ordnance last week. This brings the total cleared since the beginning of December to 2,224 explosive devices.

In a press release on their website, Masam detailed that during the past week, its teams dismantled 508 unexploded munitions and 50 anti-tank mines. Since the start of December, they have eliminated 2,042 unexploded ordnance and 154 anti-tank mines.

The project highlighted that Masam teams have managed to clear 687,880 square meters of Yemeni land this month alone.

UN reports estimate that around two million landmines have been planted by the Houthi group, classified as a terrorist organization, across various regions they have occupied. These mines have resulted in over 20,000 civilian casualties, predominantly affecting women and children. rights reports accuse the Houthis of turning Yemen into the largest minefield in history, urging the group to provide maps of the landmines they have laid to aid organizations involved in demining efforts.
