In a critical meeting on December 26, 2024, Yemeni Presidential Council member, Major General Sultan Al-Arada, emphasized the necessity of strengthening cooperation between Yemen and Egypt to address pressing security challenges in the Red Sea and ensure the safety of vital maritime routes, particularly the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait.
Al-Arada made these remarks during a discussion with Egyptian military attaché, Brigadier General Samer Shaaban, where they explored ways to bolster joint efforts in military and security sectors amid the escalating Houthi threats to maritime trade and international shipping, according to Yemen's official news agency, Saba.
Highlighting the strategic significance of the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait, Al-Arada warned that any security threats to this crucial waterway could severely impact the global economy and maritime navigation, including the Suez Canal. He noted that the strait serves as a vital artery for global trade and energy movement.
He underscored that ongoing Houthi attacks on commercial and oil vessels in the Red and Arabian Seas necessitate a regional and international response to ensure the stability of international trade and uninterrupted maritime navigation.
Al-Arada also praised Egypt's support for Yemen, noting the country's hospitality towards hundreds of thousands of Yemenis and the assistance provided, reflecting the deep historical ties between the two nations.
For his part, Brigadier General Shaaban expressed his eagerness to enhance military and security cooperation between Yemen and Egypt, aiming to achieve mutual interests and tackle current challenges effectively.
