The Yemeni Journalists' Syndicate expressed its relief on December 26, 2024, following the acquittal of journalist Ahmed Maher by the Appeals Division of the Specialized Penal Court in Aden. The syndicate noted that Maher spent two years in prison "unjustly," during which he endured various forms of intimidation and torture.

In a statement reviewed by Barran Press, the syndicate voiced its astonishment at the public prosecutor's continued obstinacy in appealing the ruling, despite the case becoming a matter of public concern. They reiterated their demand for Maher's immediate release and compensation for the psychological and physical harm he suffered.

The syndicate also called on relevant authorities to intervene to end Maher's suffering and to demonstrate goodwill towards press freedoms by ensuring a safe working environment for journalists in Yemen.

On Wednesday, the court ruled to clear Maher of all charges and ordered his immediate release.

In a related statement, the American Center for Justice (ACJ) condemned Maher's arrest as "arbitrary," highlighting that he had been detained for over two years without any legal basis. The ACJ welcomed the court's decision to acquit Maher and urged accountability for those responsible for his detention, alongside compensation for the suffering he endured.

Maher was abducted on August 6, 2022, by forces linked to the Southern Transitional Council in Aden, where he faced enforced disappearance and torture before being tried on unsubstantiated terrorism charges.
