On December 27, 2024, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) announced the temporary suspension of its airlift operations for humanitarian aid to Sana'a International Airport due to recent Israeli airstrikes.
In a brief statement from the WFP's humanitarian air service, reported by Bran Press, it was confirmed that operations at the airport have been halted temporarily.
WFP Executive Director Cindy McCain noted that the decision was made after one humanitarian worker was injured in the recent Israeli attacks. She emphasized, "The suspension of these flights, which are a lifeline for the humanitarian community in Yemen and around the world, will negatively impact the humanitarian response in the country at a time when needs are escalating significantly."
This announcement follows reports that World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus was at Sana'a Airport when it came under heavy Israeli bombardment. In a statement shared on platform X, he revealed, "I was about to board a plane from Sana'a International Airport when the airport was bombed." He added that a crew member was injured and confirmed reports of at least two fatalities at the airport, alongside damage to the air traffic control tower and the departure lounge.
The Israeli airstrikes on December 26 targeted the vicinity of the Al-Dailami Air Base, Sana'a International Airport, the Huzez power station, and also hit the port of Al-Hudaydah, along with energy and oil facilities.
