On December 28, 2024, Israeli Channel 12 provided intriguing insights into the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran on July 31.

According to the report, Haniyeh consistently stayed in the same room during his visits to Tehran, prompting Israeli intelligence to track his location for a potential strike. Initially, Israel had planned to execute the assassination during Haniyeh’s attendance at the funeral of former Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi; however, the operation faced last-minute complications.

The report highlighted that the assassination attempt was nearly delayed when the air conditioning unit in Haniyeh's room malfunctioned, complicating the execution of the attack until repairs were made.

Channel 12 disclosed that Israel utilized a bomb significantly larger than those used in previous assassination attempts, indicating that the device was concealed within Haniyeh's own pillow.

On July 31, 2024, Hamas announced the assassination of its leader, blaming Israel for a strike on his residence, although Israel did not claim responsibility at the time. Haniyeh had arrived in Tehran to attend the inauguration of Iranian President Masoud Bezhakian and had met with Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

A public and official funeral was held for Haniyeh in Tehran before he was buried in the Qatari capital, Doha.
