On December 31, 2024, security sources in Aden, Yemen's temporary capital, reported that forces aligned with the Southern Transitional Council (STC) seized a checkpoint belonging to the Presidential Guard near the Maashiq Palace, the base of the internationally recognized Yemeni government.

According to sources speaking to Barran Press, the STC forces launched an assault on the checkpoint early in the morning, firing medium-caliber weapons at personnel stationed there. The Presidential Guard troops were compelled to withdraw into the palace and did not engage in combat with the attacking forces.

Following the attack, STC fighters secured the area, heightening tensions within the palace and raising fears of potential clashes between the two factions.

The sources noted that the Presidential Guard unit is one of the last remnants of the protection detail for former President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi and has remained at the Maashiq Palace since the STC took control of Aden in 2019.
