The National Center for Meteorology and Early Warning announced on January 2, 2025, that Yemen is bracing for extremely cold weather, with the effects of a cold air mass expected to persist into next week.
In its weather bulletin, reviewed by Barran Press, the center reported that mountainous regions, particularly in the provinces of Al-Bayda, Dhamar, Sana'a, Amran, and Saada, as well as parts of al-Jawf and southern Marib, will experience clear but frigid conditions during the night and early morning hours, with the possibility of frost forming in some areas.
Temperatures in Dhamar have dropped to freezing, while cooler weather is also anticipated in the highlands of Ibb, Dhale, Lahij, and Abyan, along with the plateaus of Shabwa and Hadramout. Increased humidity may lead to fog or mist in parts of Hajjah, Al-Mahwit, Raymah, and Taiz.
The forecast also includes the chance of scattered cumulus clouds during the day, with light rain expected in the western mountainous regions adjacent to the Tihama plain. Coastal areas are likely to see partly cloudy skies, with sporadic rain possible in parts of the Socotra archipelago and the southern and western coasts, while moderate to active winds will affect the eastern coasts and the entrance to Bab al-Mandeb.
In contrast, desert areas are expected to experience clear and cold conditions overnight, with moderate to brisk winds stirring up dust and sand.
The center has warned residents in mountainous and plateau regions, as well as desert areas, to prepare for extremely cold nights and early mornings. Farmers are advised to protect crops from the severe cold, and precautions are recommended for livestock, beekeepers, and poultry farmers.
Weather expert Khaled Al-Shatah noted on Facebook that the cold air masses affecting northern desert areas of Al-Mahra, Hadramout, Shabwa, and Marib are deepening, with their peak impact expected from Friday to Tuesday, potentially dropping temperatures below freezing.
