KUWAIT CITY — Bahrain secured its second Gulf Cup title on January 4, 2025, defeating Oman 2-1 in a thrilling final at Jaber Al-Ahmad International Stadium. This victory marks Bahrain's second championship, having previously won in 2019, and it ties them with the UAE and Oman in terms of titles.
Oman initially led the match with a goal from Abdul Rahman Al-Mushaifri in the 17th minute. However, Bahrain equalized in the 79th minute when Mohammed Marhoon successfully converted a penalty kick after being fouled in the box. Just a minute later, Marhoon’s individual effort resulted in a deflected shot off Omani defender Mohammed Al-Musallami, which inadvertently found the back of the net, securing Bahrain's victory.
Bahrain's path to the title was marked by a strong start, including a 3-2 victory over Saudi Arabia and a 2-0 win against Iraq in the semifinals. Despite a loss to Yemen in the group stage, the team rebounded impressively in the knockout rounds.
Star player Kamil Al-Aswad expressed his joy, stating, "I can't describe my feelings after turning our loss into a win." His teammate, Ali Mudan, credited the unwavering support of Bahrain's fans for their comeback in the second half.
The victory is particularly significant as it breaks Bahrain's previous losing streak against Oman in critical matches, having lost four times to them in the Gulf Cup semifinals.
The match showcased a competitive spirit, with Bahrain demonstrating resilience and tactical prowess to overcome their early setback and claim the coveted trophy.
