AL HODEIDAH, Yemen — On January 5, 2025, the United Nations Mission to Support the Hudaydah Agreement (UNMHA) confirmed that 13 civilians, including eight children, were killed or injured in landmine incidents in Al Hudaydah province during December 2024.

In a statement reviewed by "Barran Press," UNMHA reported seven incidents related to landmines and unexploded ordnance in the region last month. The casualties included six fatalities, two of whom were children, while seven others were injured, with six being minors.

The landmine incidents occurred in the districts of Al-Durayhimi, Al-Hali, and Al-Houk, marking an increase compared to the previous month, indicating a persistent threat to civilians in the area.

The mission highlighted that during the past year, the Al-Hali, Al-Durayhimi, and Al-Tahita districts were among the hardest hit by such incidents, emphasizing that Yemen remains severely affected by explosive remnants of war.

Al Hudaydah is one of the most impacted provinces due to past violent clashes and ongoing conflict along the front lines in the southern part of the region.

On January 1, 2025, the Yemeni Landmine Monitor, a non-governmental organization, reported that 28 civilians fell victim to Houthi landmine explosions in December alone. Their field teams documented 11 civilian deaths, including two children, attributed to Houthi landmine blasts and unexploded ordnance.

Additionally, the monitor noted that 17 civilians were injured, including six children, and that the incidents caused damage to seven civilian vehicles. These events were recorded in various areas contaminated by landmines across five Yemeni provinces: Al Hudaydah, Taiz, Al Bayda, Al Jawf, and Hajjah.

UN reports indicate that approximately two million landmines have been planted by the Houthi group, which is internationally designated as a terrorist organization, leading to over 20,000 civilian casualties, predominantly among women and children. rights organizations accuse the Houthis of turning Yemen into the world's largest minefield and have repeatedly called on the group to provide maps of the landmines for demining organizations.
