SANA'A, Yemen — Human rights sources confirmed on Saturday that the Iran-backed Houthi group has released Yemeni educator Fahd Al-Salami after nearly nine years in detention.
Al-Salami, who served as the director of Al-Nahdha Modern Schools before his arrest in mid-2016, had been subjected to enforced disappearance and torture during his time in captivity.

In February 2022, the Houthis sentenced Al-Salami to death, along with two others, in connection with a case dubbed the "Sana'a Security Cell," which the prosecution claimed was led by Ahmad Al-Qat'a.
Al-Salami was originally detained by the Houthis in the summer of 2016 while driving on Al-Rabat Street in the capital, Sana'a.
