On January 12, 2024, Saudi Arabia will host an important meeting to discuss the situation in Syria, with participation from Arab and international representatives. Assad al-Shaibani, the Foreign Minister of the new Syrian administration, has arrived in Riyadh to join the talks.

There will be two meetings: one among Arab countries and another including France, the UK, Germany, Italy, Turkey, and Spain. The discussions will focus on supporting the new Syrian administration and the potential lifting of sanctions.

According to a Saudi official, these meetings follow previous talks held in Aqaba, Jordan, last month about post-Assad Syria.

U.S. Under Secretary of State John Bass will also attend to coordinate international support for the Syrian people.

The 13-year conflict in Syria has resulted in over half a million deaths, widespread destruction of the economy, and the displacement of millions.
