On January 12, 2025, UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, arrived in Tehran after visits to Muscat and Sana'a. His trip is part of a series of regional and national meetings to advance Yemen peace efforts. On January 9, Grundberg left Sana'a, under the control of the Iran-backed Houthi group, after a three-day visit. He emphasized reducing tensions and called on the Houthis to take concrete measures for lasting peace and stability.
Grundberg highlighted the importance of maintaining progress and urged the immediate release of detainees from the UN, NGOs, civil society, and diplomatic missions. Before Sana'a, Grundberg visited Oman and met with Omani officials and the Houthi delegation.
On December 23, 2024, the UN announced that Yemeni parties had agreed on a nationwide ceasefire, improved living conditions, and preparations for an inclusive political process. However, peace efforts have been stalled by attacks from the Iran-backed Houthi group on commercial vessels since November 2024.
