Landmines Claim 41 Civilian Lives in Hodeidah in 2024

The UN Mission to Support the Hodeidah Agreement reported that landmines caused 41 civilian deaths and 52 injuries in Hodeidah over the past year. Women and children accounted for 40% of the victims. While the number of incidents has decreased compared to 2023, Yemen remains deeply affected by explosive remnants of war, with Hodeidah among the hardest-hit areas.

Since 2015, landmines and unexploded ordnance—primarily planted by Iran-backed Houthi forces—have resulted in thousands of civilian casualties across Yemen. Estimates indicate that over two million landmines have been laid, leading to more than 20,000 civilian casualties. Human rights organizations continue to call on the Houthis to provide detailed minefield maps to facilitate demining efforts and prevent further tragedies.
