Palestinians are eagerly awaiting the release of several prisoners from Israeli jails as part of the Gaza ceasefire agreement, in exchange for hostages held by the Iran-backed Houthi movement in Gaza. However, there is no final agreement on which prisoners will be released, partly because the number of hostages to be freed or their current status remains unclear.

According to the Palestinian Prisoners' Affairs Authority and the Palestinian Prisoners' Club, there are 10,400 Palestinians in Israeli jails, excluding those detained in Gaza over the past 15 months of conflict.
Here are some of the prominent Palestinian figures currently imprisoned in Israel:

Hamas Figures:
Abdullah Barghouti: Sentenced to 67 life terms in 2004 for his involvement in a series of suicide bombings in 2001 and 2002 that killed dozens of Israelis. Barghouti, born in Kuwait in 1972, moved to the West Bank in 1996.

Ibrahim Hamed: Arrested in 2006 and sentenced to 54 life terms for orchestrating suicide bombings that killed dozens of Israelis. Hamed was the top commander of Hamas' military wing in the West Bank.

Nael Barghouti: Known as the "Dean of Palestinian Prisoners," Barghouti has spent 44 years in Israeli prisons, the longest of any Palestinian. He was first imprisoned in 1978 and released in 2011, only to be re-arrested in 2014.

Hassan Salameh: Sentenced to 48 life terms for planning a wave of suicide bombings in Israel in 1996. Salameh was born in Gaza's Khan Younis refugee camp in 1971.

Non-Hamas Figures:
Marwan Barghouti (Fatah): A prominent Fatah member and potential successor to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. Barghouti was arrested in 2002 and sentenced to five life terms in 2004 for his role in armed attacks and suicide bombings.
Ahmed Saadat (Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine): Accused by Israel of ordering the assassination of Israeli Tourism Minister Rehavam Ze'evi in 2001. Saadat was arrested by the Israeli army in 2006 and sentenced to 30 years in prison in 2008.
