The Iran-backed Houthi rebels detained seven more UN staff members in Sana'a on Saturday. Secretary-General António Guterres called for their "immediate and unconditional" release, condemning the arbitrary detentions as "unacceptable."
Following the recent incident, the UN suspended all official movements into Houthi-controlled areas. The detentions come after former US President Donald Trump ordered the re-listing of the Houthis as a terrorist organization.
In June 2024, the Houthis detained 13 UN staff members, over 50 NGO workers, and an embassy staff member. They have also held two UN human rights workers since 2021 and 2023.
