Aden, Yemen's temporary capital, is on the brink of a complete power outage within 24 hours due to critically low fuel supplies, the Public Electricity Corporation warned on Saturday.
The corporation issued a desperate plea, appealing to Presidential Leadership Council member Faraj Al-Bahsani, Hadramout Governor Mabkhout bin Madi, and the Hadramout Tribal Alliance to urgently provide crude oil to the President Power Plant, Aden's last functioning power source.
The plant is currently operating at only 65 MW (partial capacity) due to fuel shortages, supplementing daytime solar power. All other power generation stations in Aden have already shut down.
The imminent shutdown of the President Power Plant would cripple essential services, including hospitals, water pumping stations, and other critical infrastructure, drastically worsening the already dire living conditions in the city.
Despite repeated appeals to relevant authorities in recent weeks, the corporation stated that it has received no response. "We face a catastrophic reality that can only be averted by the direct and swift intervention of the Hadramout Governorate leadership," the corporation emphasized, urging Al-Bahsani and bin Madi to secure a continuous crude oil supply and prevent an unprecedented crisis in Aden.
Aden is grappling with its worst electricity crisis in decades, triggering angry protests over the collapsing power services and increasing blackouts. Prime Minister Ahmed bin Mubarak recently acknowledged the government's financial struggles, stating that importing fuel for Aden's power plants costs two million dollars daily, a significant drain on public funds.
The Hadramout Tribal Alliance has been operating checkpoints for months, halting oil tankers from PetroMasila, including fuel destined for electricity generation. While the alliance released several trucks as a humanitarian gesture two weeks ago, according to their statement, this has not resolved the critical fuel shortage.
