On Sunday, Yemeni Parliament Speaker Sheikh Sultan Al-Barakani urged the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump to approach Yemen’s crisis as a political issue, emphasizing the detrimental impact of the Iran-backed Houthi rebellion.
During a meeting with U.S. Ambassador Steven Fagin, Al-Barakani welcomed the U.S. designation of the Houthis as a foreign terrorist organization, describing it as a crucial step in cutting off their funding and restricting their operations. He also condemned the group's abduction of UN and international organization employees.
Al-Barakani stressed the importance of international collaboration and called on the U.S. to prioritize peace efforts in Yemen. The discussion also covered strengthening Yemen-U.S. cooperation in economic and humanitarian sectors, as well as reinforcing Yemen’s government institutions.
Ambassador Fagin reaffirmed the U.S.’s commitment to supporting Yemen and addressing the challenges posed by the Houthis.
