On the evening of February 5, 2025, angry protests broke out in Aden, Yemen’s temporary capital, as residents voiced frustration over ongoing power outages.
According to Barran Press, demonstrators set fire to tires and blocked major roads in Al-Mansoura, Khor Maksar, and Sheikh Othman districts, demanding immediate action from the Yemeni government and Aden’s governor to resolve the crisis. Protesters warned of escalating demonstrations if their grievances were ignored.
In response, security forces from the Southern Transitional Council (STC) were deployed to prevent vandalism. However, locals accused them of suppressing peaceful demonstrations calling for improved electricity services.
The STC has blamed the Yemeni government and the Presidential Leadership Council for Aden’s deteriorating public services. In an official statement, the STC urged the Arab Coalition—particularly Saudi Arabia and the UAE—to intervene and prevent a looming humanitarian disaster in Aden and other southern provinces.
The General Electricity Corporation in Aden warned that a complete blackout was imminent due to fuel shortages at the President power station.
