The United Nations announced on February 10, 2025, that it has suspended all operations in Saada, the Houthi stronghold in Yemen.
UN Deputy Spokesman Farhan Haq stated that the suspension was prompted by the increasing number of UN staff being abducted by the Houthis. The decision aims to balance the need to maintain essential operations with ensuring the safety and security of UN personnel.
This follows the recent abduction of seven UN staff members in Sana'a, also under Houthi control. UN Secretary-General António Guterres has called for their immediate and unconditional release.
In response to these incidents, the UN has also suspended all official travel into Houthi-controlled territories. These actions come after the reinstatement of the Houthis on the U.S. list of Foreign Terrorist Organizations.
