The Saudi Project for Landmine Clearance in Yemen (Masam) announced Wednesday, February 12, 2025, the successful destruction of 1,749 pieces of unexploded ordnance (UXO) in Dhubab and Bab al-Mandeb, Taiz governorate.
The clearance operation, conducted by Masam's second special tasks team, neutralized a range of dangerous items, including Katyusha rockets, fuses, anti-tank and anti-personnel mines, explosive devices, and shells.
Local residents have expressed relief at the removal of these hazardous remnants of war, which have posed a constant threat to their lives and livelihoods. This operation follows Masam's destruction last week of 2,015 pieces of UXO in Abyan governorate.
According to UN reports, the Iran-backed Houthi rebels are estimated to have planted approximately two million landmines in Yemen, resulting in over 20,000 civilian casualties, the majority of whom are women and children. Human rights organizations have repeatedly called on the Houthis to provide maps of mined areas to facilitate safe clearance efforts.
