The Saudi Project for Landmine Clearance (MASAM) has announced the removal of 1,250 mines, unexploded ordnance (UXO), and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in Yemen since the beginning of February. These explosive devices were planted by the Iran-backed Houthi rebels.
In the past week alone, MASAM teams cleared 536 devices, including 478 UXO and 48 anti-tank mines, according to a statement seen by Barran Press. This brings the total cleared since February to 1,162 UXO and 78 anti-tank mines.
MASAM also cleared 477,140 square meters of land last month, contributing to a total of over 65 million square meters cleared since the project began.
The UN estimates that the Houthis have planted approximately two million mines, resulting in over 20,000 civilian casualties, primarily women and children.
Human rights organizations have repeatedly called on the Houthis to provide maps of minefields to facilitate demining efforts.
