On Sunday ,the Saudi Project for Landmine Clearance in Yemen (MASAM) reported clearing 2,111 mines, unexploded ordnance, and explosive devices this month. According to a statement on MASAM’s official website, the past week alone saw the removal of 810 unexploded ordnances and 44 anti-tank mines. Since its launch, the project has neutralized 482,637 such threats as of February 21.
UN estimates suggest the Iran-backed Houthis, designated as a terrorist group by many Western nations, have planted around two million mines across areas they’ve controlled, claiming over 20,000 civilian lives—mostly women and children. Rights groups accuse the Houthis of creating the world’s largest minefield in Yemen, with human rights organizations repeatedly pressing them to provide minefield maps to demining teams.
