UN Special Envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, warned the Security Council Thursday that Yemen is dangerously close to a full-scale return to conflict, stating, "Fear of a full return to conflict is now palpable."

Grundberg stressed his office's readiness to pursue any opportunity for peace, urging all parties, including the Houthis, to abandon military escalation and retaliatory actions that would devastate civilians. He acknowledged the "deep frustration" of Yemenis enduring a decade of war, reaffirming his commitment to a "principled and impartial resolution."

Despite challenges, Grundberg and his team are actively engaging with Yemeni and international stakeholders to forge a path forward. He highlighted three critical priorities: establishing a nationwide ceasefire with clear implementation, addressing Yemen's collapsing economy through necessary compromises, and launching an inclusive political process.

Regarding the U.S. designation of the Houthis as a Foreign Terrorist Organization, Grundberg noted the uncertain implications and emphasized the need to protect peace efforts. He reiterated his call for the Houthis to immediately release all arbitrarily detained individuals and underscored the vital role of Yemeni women in promoting empowerment and participating in decision-making.
Grundberg concluded by stressing the urgent need for coordinated support from regional and international actors to facilitate a Yemeni-led peace process.
