The Saudi Project for Landmine Clearance in Yemen (Masam) announced the removal of 1,034 pieces of unexploded ordnance and 24 anti-tank mines in a single week, all planted by the Iran-backed Houthi group, a designated terrorist organization.
According to Masam's website, this brings the project's total clearance to 484,401 landmines, unexploded ordnance, and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) since 2018.
UN reports indicate that the Houthis have planted approximately two million landmines, resulting in over 20,000 civilian casualties, primarily women and children.
Human rights groups condemn the Houthis for transforming Yemen into a vast minefield and are calling for the immediate handover of landmine maps to facilitate further clearance efforts.
