Over the past five years (late 2019 to early 2025), the Saudi Project for Landmine Clearance in Yemen (Masam) has successfully cleared 51 minefields in Al-Dhalea governorate, as stated in a report reviewed by Barran Press.
Masam teams have removed over 2,000 deadly anti-personnel mines and other explosives. This effort has reclaimed over 234,000 square meters of land, making farms, homes, schools, and water wells safe again. Team 18 has conducted six safe mine destruction operations, following stringent international standards.

According to UN reports, the Iran-backed Houthi rebels are responsible for planting an estimated two million mines across Yemen. These mines have caused over 20,000 civilian casualties, primarily affecting women and children.
Human rights organizations strongly condemn the Houthis for transforming Yemen into what they call the largest minefield in history. They are demanding that the Houthis provide mine maps to aid demining efforts.
