In February 2025, the United Nations Mission to Support the Hodeidah Agreement (UNMHA) reported a rise in civilian casualties due to landmines and unexploded ordnance in Hodeidah, Yemen. According to a UNMHA statement reported by "Barran Press," three civilians were killed: two children and a woman. Additionally, three other civilians sustained injuries.
The incidents occurred in the districts of Al-Khawkhah, Al-Hawak, and Bayt Al-Faqih. UNMHA highlighted that the number of mine-related casualties increased in February compared to January, underscoring the persistent danger to civilians.
Reports indicate that the Iran-backed Houthis are responsible for planting an estimated two million mines across Yemen. These mines have caused over 20,000 civilian casualties, including a significant number of women and children. Human rights organizations are calling on the Houthis to provide landmine maps to facilitate mine clearance efforts.
