On March 12, 2025, UN Special Envoy Hans Grundberg convened meetings in Riyadh, urging intensified regional and international collaboration to foster constructive dialogue and advance a comprehensive political resolution to the Yemeni conflict. Key discussions with Saudi Ambassador Mohammed Al-Jaber, UAE Ambassador Mohammed Al-Zaabi, P5 ambassadors, and other senior officials underscored the critical need for unified efforts to achieve a peaceful settlement.
During these meetings, P5 ambassadors, as relayed by Acting Russian Ambassador to Yemen, Evgeny Kudrov, reaffirmed their collective opposition to any actions that could precipitate a further escalation of hostilities.
This diplomatic push follows Grundberg's March 6 briefing to the UN Security Council, where he expressed grave concerns over Yemen's deteriorating situation. He emphasized the imperative for all parties to exercise restraint, avoiding military force and retaliatory measures that could plunge the nation back into widespread conflict, with devastating consequences for civilians.
Compounding these concerns are the escalating combat operations initiated by the Iran-backed Houthis since the beginning of 2025. The group, designated as a foreign terrorist organization, has intensified its attacks across several Yemeni provinces, notably targeting the strategically vital, oil-rich province of Marib, raising fears of a significant conflict resurgence.
