Banks operating in Houthi-controlled Sana'a are relocating their headquarters to Aden to avoid stringent U.S. sanctions imposed on the group, the Central Bank of Yemen announced Friday.
The bank, based in Aden, welcomed the decision and pledged support for the institutions to ensure uninterrupted financial services, emphasizing the need to safeguard Yemen's banking system amid growing challenges.
The move follows the U.S. designation of the Houthis as a "Foreign Terrorist Organization" on March 4, 2025, and subsequent Treasury Department sanctions on seven senior Houthi leaders for arms smuggling.
The Central Bank's statement, obtained by Barran Press, highlights the significant economic impact of the U.S. measures.
