U.S. President Donald Trump announced the launch of a “decisive and powerful” military campaign against the Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen, vowing to put an end to their attacks on American ships, aircraft, and drones.
Speaking on Truth Social, Trump criticized former President Joe Biden’s “weak” response, claiming it had emboldened the Houthis. “Your time is up,” he declared, pledging to use “overwhelming lethal force” to protect U.S. interests and restore freedom of navigation in the Red Sea.
According to The New York Times, U.S. airstrikes have already targeted Houthi-controlled radars, air defenses, and missile systems, aiming to reopen critical shipping lanes. Officials indicate the operation could last several days and may escalate depending on the Houthis’ response. However, Trump has yet to approve a broader strategy to strip the Houthis of territorial control, citing concerns over entangling the U.S. in a prolonged Middle Eastern conflict.
Trump accused the Houthis of launching missile attacks on U.S. aircraft, targeting American forces and allies, and inflicting billions of dollars in economic damage. He described their actions as a direct assault on global commerce and the principle of freedom of navigation. “Our brave fighters are now conducting airstrikes on terrorist bases, leaders, and missile defense systems to protect American ships and restore stability,” he stated.
In a stern warning, Trump told the Houthis: “Your attacks must stop today. If not, hell will rain down on you in ways you have never seen before.” He also called on Iran to immediately cease its support for the Houthis, warning of severe consequences if threats to American interests persist.
Earlier, Houthi-affiliated media reported an attack on Yemen’s capital, Sana’a, without providing further details. The New York Times confirmed that the U.S. strikes are part of a broader effort to counter Houthi aggression and restore stability in the region.
