The Saudi demining project "Masam" announced on March 16, 2025, that its teams cleared 1,582 mines planted by the Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen during the first two weeks of March. The explosives included 548 anti-tank and anti-personnel mines, unexploded ordnance, and improvised explosive devices in the second week of March, according to a statement shared with Barran Press. This follows a report on March 9th that Masam had removed 1,034 landmines and explosives in the preceding week.
Since its launch in 2018, Masam has dismantled nearly 485,000 mines scattered indiscriminately across Yemen.
UN reports estimate that the Houthis have planted two million mines, which have caused over 20,000 civilian casualties, mostly women and children. Human rights groups have repeatedly urged the Houthis to provide maps of minefields to facilitate demining efforts.
