The Saudi Project for Landmine Clearance in Yemen (Masam) reported that the Houthi group has deployed camouflaged landmines designed to target civilians, including women.
According to Masam, a landmine disguised as a women’s cosmetic bag was discovered in eastern Taiz province. The device contained a pressure-and-pull mechanism, a battery, and an electric detonator, designed to detonate upon opening or closing the bag.
Brigadier Arif Al-Qahtani, Masam’s operations supervisor in Taiz, confirmed the device was dismantled and secured. He stated that this represents a new tactic by the Houthi group to specifically target Yemeni women. The landmine was reportedly manufactured in Houthi workshops, indicating an effort to increase civilian casualties.
Masam urged citizens to be cautious when encountering unfamiliar objects, highlighting the Houthi group’s disregard for humanitarian and ethical considerations.
UN reports estimate that approximately two million landmines have been planted across Yemen, resulting in over 20,000 civilian casualties, primarily women and children. Rights organizations have repeatedly called on the Houthi group to provide maps of minefields to facilitate clearance operations.
