On Friday, March 28, 2025, the Sudanese Army declared complete control of Khartoum, marking a turning point in the conflict with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, known as "Hemedti." This announcement comes after a week of intensified military operations that saw the recapture of the presidential palace.
Army spokesperson Nabil Abdullah stated, "Today, our forces successfully cleared the last pockets of the Al-Dagalo terrorist militia in Khartoum locality." He dismissed RSF claims of a negotiated withdrawal as propaganda, underscoring their retreat as a result of military pressure rather than diplomacy.
Key victories included securing the Khartoum International Airport and strategic sites such as RSF headquarters, bridges linking Khartoum to East Nile, and various military and police bases. Reuters reported that residents observed RSF withdrawals from most areas of the city, while the army consolidated its presence.
This conflict, ongoing since April 2023, has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and displaced over 12 million people, creating a humanitarian crisis of unprecedented scale. Hunger and mass displacement continue to plague Sudan.
