The World Food Programme (WFP) urgently warned on Tuesday that the U.S. administration's decision to suspend emergency food aid to 14 countries, including Yemen, is "a death sentence for millions facing acute hunger and famine."
In a statement via X," the WFP expressed "profound concern" over the U.S. intention to end this vital aid to Yemen and other nations. The UN agency is seeking clarification from the U.S., urging continued support for these life-saving programs.
"Implementing this risks a humanitarian catastrophe, threatening millions suffering severe food insecurity," the WFP stated, requesting official clarification and thanking past donors. The Houthis have not commented.
On April 7, 2025, Reuters reported U.S. officials stating the Trump administration would halt most or all remaining aid to Afghanistan and Yemen. Last month, Secretary of State Rubio announced the restructuring of USAID with an 83% budget cut, with remaining aid programs transferring to the State Department. Since January, President Trump has frozen foreign aid and cut USAID staff, disrupting their website.
