On Monday, April 8, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that his administration is engaging in direct talks with Iran regarding its nuclear program, which Tehran has consistently refused to abandon. Trump described the upcoming meeting, scheduled for Saturday, as "highly significant," expressing optimism that the discussions could persuade Iran to relinquish its nuclear ambitions, which Iran insists are for peaceful purposes.
Following Trump's announcement, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi confirmed that indirect "high-level" negotiations between Iran and the United States would take place in Oman on Saturday. In a press conference, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei revealed that Iran had submitted its response to the U.S. and was awaiting a decision. Baghaei characterized Iran's proposal for indirect negotiations as "generous and responsible," considering the historical complexities surrounding this issue over the past decade.
The diplomatic exchanges come after Trump disclosed on March 7 that he had sent a letter to Iran proposing negotiations on a nuclear agreement. Trump warned that military action remained an option if Iran refused to engage. Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei responded on March 8, rejecting negotiations under what he termed "American bullying." Khamenei accused certain governments of using talks not to resolve issues but to impose demands and advance conspiracies.
The White House has since reiterated its stance, with National Security Council spokesperson Brian Hughes stating that the U.S. approach to Iran would involve "military action or a negotiated agreement." This echoes Trump's earlier remarks during an interview with Fox Business.
