A civilian vehicle was severely damaged on Sunday in Al-Jawf Governorate, northeastern Yemen, when it detonated a landmine left by the Iran-backed Houthis. A local source informed "Barran Press" that the driver, Mohammed Masoud Qaboua, survived, though the rear of his vehicle was completely destroyed.
The explosion occurred in the Wadi Salbah grazing area of Khub wa Sha'af District, a region heavily contaminated with Houthi-planted landmines. The source stated that the Houthis extensively mined Wadi Salbah and the Qashaan Mountains in 2020 and early 2021, areas that remain under their control since their eastward advance in December 2021, posing a continuous threat to civilians.
Rights organizations accuse the Iran-backed Houthis of making Yemen the world's largest landmine field, with over two million planted. UN data indicates these mines have caused over 20,000 civilian casualties, mainly women and children. Rights groups have repeatedly urged the Houthis to share minefield maps for safe removal.
