An improvised explosive device (IED) targeted a military patrol belonging to the Southern Transitional Council (STC) in the Al-Faridah area of Mudiyah district, eastern Abyan governorate, according to local sources. The attack occurred as the STC vehicle was transporting a soldier who had sustained injuries.
Local sources indicated that suspected operatives of Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) are likely responsible for the ambush. As of Monday, there have been no official reports of casualties resulting from the explosion.
This incident marks the latest in a series of security challenges in Mudiyah. Just days prior, on April 8, unidentified gunmen launched an attack on a security checkpoint in the same district. The assailants reportedly used light and medium weaponry, as well as mortar shells, to target the Qouz junction post, although no injuries were reported in that incident.
Mudiyah district has witnessed a notable escalation in violence in recent months. In late March, a similar IED attack resulted in the death of one STC soldier and injuries to six others. These repeated assaults are believed to be retaliatory actions by AQAP, which has faced increasing pressure from counterterrorism operations in the region since August 2022.
