The United States has stressed the need to preserve security and stability in Yemen’s eastern Hadramawt province as tensions escalate between local political and tribal factions.

In a statement on Sunday, U.S. Ambassador Steven Fagin reiterated Washington’s support for a stable and unified Hadramawt, warning of persistent threats posed by the Iran-backed Houthis. Posted on the U.S. Embassy’s official X account, the statement urged all political, social, and tribal leaders to resolve disputes through peaceful dialogue and avoid internal divisions. Fagin emphasized the importance of unity in countering the Houthis’ expansionist ambitions.

The appeal followed heightened unrest in Hadramawt. On April 12, the Hadramawt Tribal Alliance organized a mass gathering to demand self-rule, underscoring growing rifts within the province.

In response, Hadramawt’s High Security Committee convened an emergency meeting, denouncing efforts to destabilize the region and cautioning against unauthorized military or security activities. Separately, the Hadramawt Inclusive Conference accused unnamed groups of deploying more than 2,500 armed fighters from southern governorates—including Aden, Lahj, and Al-Dhalea—between April 11 and 14. The conference alleged this was a deliberate attempt to provoke conflict and impose a political agenda by force.
